MEET THE STYLE STARS OF WEEKSVILLE, BROOKLYN

We are excited to announce that on June 17th, we will be opening our latest exhibition, 'Fashioning THE WOMEN OF Weeksville".

Back in March, Weeskville Heritage Center hosted a conference entitled, "Fashioning the Black Body in Bondage & Freedom". It was there that we discussed the evolution of black women's style, shared archival photos of 1800s dress, and had panels covering everything from Black dandyism to cotton. As we prepare for part two in the fall, we are taking a moment to highlight the stylish women from this community.

The clothing that one wears is, in many ways, a chronicle of the time in which it was worn. Weeksville was established in 1838 by James Weeks, as an intentional community and safe haven for persons of color. This exhibition uses clothing and artifacts to illuminate three of the most crucial periods in the history of Weeksville.

Grab it. Grab this land! Take it, hold it, my brothers, make it, my brothers, shake it, squeeze it, turn it, twist it, beat it, kick it, kiss it, whip it, stomp it, dig it, plow it, seed it, reap it, rent it, buy it, sell it, own it, build it, multiply it, and pass it on.

- Toni Morrison, Song of Solomon (1977)
