Joan Maynard

Joan Maynard

Joan Maynard (1928-2006) was a founding  member and a former president of the Weeksville Society for the Preservation of Weeksville and Bedford Stuyvesant. In 1974, she became the Society’s first director, serving until 1999. Trained as a professional artist, she was a staunch preservationist who fought mightily to preserve the Hunterfly Road Houses for future generations. Her leadership of the grassroots efforts to save the houses led to them being cited as New York City landmarks and listed as nationally significant on the National Register of Historic Places. She lived to see the dilapidated houses she first saw in 1968 opened to the public with much fanfare in 2005 after a $3 million restoration.
