In Pursuit of Freedom (IPOF)
In Pursuit of Freedom, is a project that includes a permanent exhibition, resource materials & programming, that celebrates and commemorates the rich abolitionist and radical history of Brooklyn, from downtown (Dumbo, Brooklyn Heights, and Williamsburg) to historic Weeksville. As a collaboration with the Brooklyn Historical Society and Irondale Theater, Weeksville’s exhibit presents its community-based archive of people and social histories, businesses, entrepreneurship, churches, civic societies, and schools that inform historical understanding of life in 19th-century Central Brooklyn.
Weeksville’s In Pursuit of Freedom, is a thought-provoking multimedia exhibition that explores the origins of one of the first free black communities in the country. This special exhibition encourages visitors to make discoveries and establish their own meaning about the significance of the pursuit of equity and social justice in america. We invite you to explore, reflect, and share findings and thoughts about community – past, present, and future.
The In Pursuit of Freedom exhibition can be viewed as part of a public tour.
