Lift Every Voice, Cast Every Vote: A Night of Honoring this Legacy through Art and Conversation

Fri,Oct 11, 2024 @ 5:30 pm 8:30 pm

Brooklyn has a long rich history of embodying the freedom and promise of democracy. Join The Brooklyn (NY) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated and Weeksville Heritage Center for “Lift Every Voice, Cast Every Vote: A Night of Honoring this Legacy through Art and Conversation.”

Our theme is honoring democracy, from Weeksville to Shirley Chisholm to the present. In that spirit, award-winning actress, Ingrid Griffin, will present her riveting one-woman show, Unbossed Unbowed, which chronicles the life of Shirley Chisholm, a Brooklyn native, the first Black woman elected to Congress, and the first woman from a major party to run for President of the United States. The night will also feature a welcome reception, voter registration, and a panel discussion moderated by Toni Yuille Williams and featuring Shaquana Boykin, District Leader, Assembly District 57; Dr. Raymond Codrington; President and CEO, Weeksville Heritage Center; Zinga Fraser, Ph.D., Director, Shirley Chisholm Project, Brooklyn College; Kathleen Daniel, NYC Civic Engagement Commission and; Jordan Gaither, Independent Filmmaker.

The setting for “Lift Every Voice, Cast Every Vote” is a main character in this freedom story. Weeksville is a historic neighborhood founded in 1838 by Black people acting on their newfound freedom. It is on their shoulders we forever stand.
